Tivoli Gardens is an enchanting destination year-round, but it becomes particularly magical in October. As one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, Tivoli transforms into an autumn wonderland during the Halloween season, drawing visitors with its nostalgic charm and festive atmosphere.

I am not actually a huge fan of Halloween, nor do I have children or a particular interest in the rides at Tivoli, so I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed my October day out at the gardens. During my visit to Copenhagen in October, I decided to take advantage of the Copenhagen City Pass I had and use it for entry to Tivoli. It turned out to be incredibly magical and really conjured nostalgic autumn vibes that I miss from my childhood in America. (While Halloween is celebrated in the UK, the pumpkin patch, apple cider, fairground type of atmosphere is something I haven’t experienced for ten years!)

Tivoli is actually pretty special, especially in the autumn, so here’s a preview of Tivoli at Halloween.

An autumn wonderland in the heart of Copenhagen

In October, Tivoli Gardens is adorned with thousands of pumpkins, lanterns, and seasonal decorations that create a picturesque setting. The park's design, reminiscent of a mini-Disneyland but with a delightfully retro vibe, makes it the perfect backdrop for an autumn adventure. In fact, it was Tivoli that originally inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland, so you can imagine the magical vibes. Thousands of pumpkins, some giant ones grown at farms across Denmark, are displayed throughout the park, adding to the harvest-time feel.

The decorations extend to every corner, from the entrance to the themed gardens and rides. The combination of autumn leaves, glowing lanterns, and spooky Halloween decor turns Tivoli into a magical and nostalgic place.

Family fun and festivities

Tivoli Gardens offers a wide range of activities that cater to both children and adults. For the young ones, the park provides endless entertainment. Kids can ride on a witch’s broomstick through the air, explore the friendly ghost train, or participate in trick-or-treating during the final days of October. The Rasmus Klump shows, featuring a beloved Danish children's character, are another highlight for families, offering lighthearted fun amidst the spooky surroundings.

Adults who aren’t interested in rides will still find plenty to enjoy. Simply strolling through the park, soaking in the autumnal decorations and enjoying the festive atmosphere, can be a cosy experience. For those who are more interested in spooky Halloween vibes, there is a haunted house called Villa Vendetta.

Is Tivoli worth the cost? Visiting Tivoli with the Copenhagen City Card

I ended up visiting Tivoli because it was included on the Copenhagen City Card. I purchased the card because I was visiting loads of art museums in Copenhagen, and Tivoli ended up being a really nice bonus. So this ended up being the most economical way for me to visit Tivoli by far! It is a little pricey so I do recommend getting the card if you’ll be doing a lot of the attractions in Copenhagen. You can top up the entrance with a rides package if you wish.

Tivoli did strike me as a bit expensive, and I’m not sure I would have gone if it wasn’t included in my pass. But I am so glad that I did and now I know that it is worth the cost! And expense is to be expected in Copenhagen, really.
